Black Rock Branch Library
Closed for renovation until further notice.
October 29, 2007

After more than 10 years of building support and funding, construction has begun on Bridgeport Public Library’s Black Rock Branch to renovate and expand the original 1932 building to 10,900 square feet, more than double the original usable space.
In October 2006 Mayor Fabrizi announced that $2.475 million in LoCIP funds would be made available for the Project. That amount, combined with $1.1 million in proceeds from City bonds and a $375,000 grant from the Connecticut State Library, made it possible for the Library to proceed with the project (total: $3,950,000). The Library also is indebted to City Council representatives, Thomas A. Mulligan and Donna Curran for their work and support and to the perseverance and diligent efforts of the Library Board of Directors. The newly renovated and expanded branch will open under the leadership of new City Librarian, Scott Hughes.
Ann Osbon, Assistant City Librarian, working with architect Angela Cahill from Schoenhardt, Inc., consultant Nancy Johmann and Library Board Advisor, architect Mark Halstead, formed a team with David Cote, Head of the City’s Construction Management Services, and Sean Archer, Project Manager, to revisit and refine previous plans worked on by former City Librarian, Michael A. Golrick.
Carlson Construction of Stratford CT was the lowest bidder for the project and officially began work on the site on October 3, 2007. The expected completion date is early August 2008.
When the Branch is finished the main entrance will be on ground level eliminating the original stairs to the front entrance. Once inside patrons will have the choice of either an elevator or stairs to reach the upper main floor for children, teens and adult materials and services, or descend to the lower level which provides two meeting rooms for library and community use. The library will be wired for 21st century telecommunications, which will enable the branch to grow with technological advances.
On July 18, bids for the Black Rock Renovation and Expansion were opened.
