Burroughs & Saden Teen Cafe

Calling all Teens! The Burroughs and Saden Great Teen Library  Outreach Space downtown (BPL’s own version of GTL) which opened last December, is in search of teens who want to share their creative talents and help direct the future of the Teen Café. 

On Monday, May 21, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. there will be a brainstorming session to form a new Teen Library Advisory Board. Open to Junior High & High School students, teens will work with library staff to participate and promote future programs they help design!  Current programs include: Chess club, Video gaming, Zombie workshops, Scrabble club, feature films, and more.

Light refreshments will be served.

Speak Out Against Bullying

The Hearst Connecticut Newspaper Group is embarking on a project delving into bullying in our schools and woud like to hear directly from students.

The Bridgeport Public Library has opened its new teen space located in the library’s first floor Popular Library section.

Devoted entirely to teens, the space features comfortable seating areas including café style tables, computers with internet access, books, magazines, board games, and college prep materials.

Begun as a Public Allies Connecticut Bridgeport Team project, contributions for the furnishings were graciously supported by the Pitney Bowes Foundation. The Bridgeport Community Leadership Team donated $5000.00 followed by a $2,500 corporate grant at the end of 2008 for a total of $7,500.00. “The Teen Space is a truly inspiring effort that aligns with our mission to focus on education and literacy,” said Kathleen Ryan Mufson, director of corporate citizenship and philanthropy at Pitney Bowes. “Pitney Bowes is committed to working on these social issues, and we are delighted to support The Bridgeport Public Library through this project.”
Local teen volunteers contributed to the space painting walls and transforming older library furniture to tie in with the colorful and warm area. Future teen programs will be featured in this new space among them video gaming, book talks, chess workshops, arts and crafts, and teen related topic workshops.

April 21st marked the official opening of the Black Rock Teen Center. The opening was celebrated with a special “Vacation Wii-k Tournament & Pizza Party.” Needless to say, a good time was had by all.    

………………..The Teen Center  provides neighborhood teens with an after school place of their own to come to study, get homework help or just have fun. Currently 9 computers, Wii, chess and other board games are available at the center as well as books and magazines. A Teen Advisory Board has been formed and they are working with library staff to help plan future programs and events.     

The Center will be open daily from 3:00 – 5:00 PM

The Black Rock Branch would like to express its gratitude to the members of Black Rock Rotary for their efforts and generous support in making the Teen Center a reality and a success. We look forward to working with Rotary on an ongoing basis as we grow and expand the services of the Black Rock Teen Center.

A good time was had by all recently at the Black Rock Teen Center as Fairfield University students joined our neighborhood teens  for some fun and learning. This was the first of a 7 part Mass Media and Society Class led by Professor Gisela Gil.
